Why do agents ask for Social Security Numbers?

Many people don’t like giving out their Social Security Number. Many of us have this fear that if someone gets a hold of our Social Security Number that we will end up Jason Bateman in his recent move Identity Theft.
Insurance companies ask for our SSN because they use it to generate an insurance score. Insurance scores are not designed to measure creditworthiness but to measure risk. Insurance scores are typically ran for personal lines of insurance, like car insurance and home insurance. Different companies have different ways of generating a insurance score so one company may rank you in a different tier than another company. This is a good reason to contact an independent agent so he can shop you with there several companies. Independent agents will know their insurance carriers so they can match you up with the best company for you.
